Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 is the final phase of secondary education , and it is for pupils aged 14 to 16. It covers the last two years of secondary school, and is divided into Years 10 and 11.

In Key Stage 4, pupils typically study a range of 7-10 subjects, including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • A modern foreign language
  • Humanities (e.g. history, geography, economics)
  • Arts (e.g. art and design, music, drama)
  • Technology (e.g. design and technology, computing)
  • Physical education (PE)

Pupils also have the opportunity to study additional subjects, such as religious education, citizenship, and Latin.

The main focus of Key Stage 4 is to prepare pupils for their IGCSEs, which they will take at the end of Year 11.

IGCSEs are standardized exams that are used to assess pupils’ knowledge and skills in a variety of subjects.

In Key Stage 4, pupils are encouraged to develop their independent learning skills and to take responsibility for their own learning. They are also encouraged to think critically and to develop their own opinions.

At the end of Key Stage 4, pupils will be awarded IGCSE grades in each of the subjects they have studied. These grades will be used to determine whether pupils are eligible to progress to further education, such as A-levels or vocational courses.

Key Stage 4 is an important time in a child’s education, and it is a time when they can make great progress. With the right support, all pupils can reach their full potential.
